March is for Mitten Shadows
Monument Valley is a beautiful place to visit any time, but twice a year there is a unique event that you don’t want to miss.
The Mitten Shadow Event
In late March and mid September, the West Mitten Butte casts its shadow onto East Mitten Butte at sunset, creating a “shadow handshake.”
The Mitten Shadow is best seen around the 30th of March and then again on approximately September 13th.
Not only does the sun’s positioning cause this event to occur only twice a year, but the skies also have to be clear enough for the sunlight to cast a shadow, so it’s a good idea to check out the forecast beforehand.
How To See The Mitten Shadows
While you can see the Mitten Shadows on your own, the best way to experience it is to take a guided tour.
This year, Goulding’s Resort and Tours is offering a specialty Mitten Shadow Tour on March 28, 29, and 30. This two-and-a-half-hour experience is a spectacular and personalized way to see the shadow.
